7 Canons of Journalism

Responsibility: journalists has certain obligations they need to perform to make sure of whatever they put out there. That's being a good listener. Listen to source to source after source in order to avoid certain flaws. UTV this year with one Owusu Bempah were ordered by an Accra high court to pay certain amount of money to Mr. Ibrahim Mahama for false publication. They could have avoid such if they cross checked before publishing it.

Freedom of the press: For a country to develop well, they cannot do away with the press. The media should be allow to operate freely without any governmental control. However the situation sometimes are different where a lot of journalists and media houses are been attacked.  Recently the closure of radio gold and xyz generate a lot of talk because people saw it as a clear example of how the media's right are been curtailed.

Independence: the Independence of the media may ensure accountability of the state officials because they do not have control over them(media). In Ghana for instance a program "fabewoso" on Adom FM objective is to expose the rot in governance. It has been sustain because government do not own or have a say in the station. If not they wouldn't have come up with such program in the first place.

Sincerity, truthfulness, accuracy: journalists  are to make sure that they provide truth and accurate news to it citizens. There should treat fake news as such of which they become sincere to it people. When presenting news, they should make sure all the necessary requirements are all presented in the news such checking of spellings, age , date etc. They should be vigilant in the course of their duties.

Impartiality: journalists shouldn't be bias towards one side because of his or her personal gains. Journalists shouldn't do certain things that will favour one side in order to make the other look bad. In Ghana, some media houses are politically affiliated, so they to bias towards their opponent even when they are wrong.

Fair play: the media should be fair in all their activities. In Ghana, some journalists sometimes are not fair in the course of their work. You see a presenter/host allocating time to guests and you will see one will get much time compared to the other but it shouldn't suppose to be so.

Descency : journalists should be mindful of whatever they put out there in terms of their utterances etc. In as much as they are being mindful of their own utterances they should also ensure descency on the side of their guests when hosting programs.
