Journalistic functions

To inform: one of the functions of a journalist is to inform the general public by giving official information about matters which then become news. Media houses in Ghana normally gives out information through their news bulletin in the morning, afternoon and evening or their programs.

Interpretation function: one of the function of journalists is to interpret facts they present to their citizens by way of giving detailed analysis of it. Journalist does not only report or bring out facts. In Ghana for instance they do this through their discussion segment on their programs or shows.

Agenda setting function: this function talks about how the media set the agenda or pick certain issues or topics or news that the general public should discuss or debate on. Here the people views are sometimes needed. The media normally uses news or topics that may have the interest of the people. Which might affect them positively or negatively. Recently, when the 2020 budget was read almost all the media houses in Ghana put side all other topics that was trending then and went in for matters that was raise in the budget.

Political function: In Ghana the media is seen as the fourth arm of government. They perform a watchdog role of which they monitor powers of state authorities. They do this by drawing the attention of government on certain implementation that may not benefit the country. For instance they can help kick against any deal or implementation of any policy by the government if it will cost the country financially or otherwise.
