News Values
News Values first of all are things or ways we use to determine news. Where news in simple term is anything unusual or odd. Therefore we have certain things we consider when determining news which then become the values. Here are some of the values benefits, proximity, conflict/controversy, prominence, oddity etc..
Benefits: people become interested to stories or news that will be of benefit to them. In Ghana when the government wanted to introduce the free SHS policy, it became news, almost all media house in Ghana was talking about it including the citizens because most of the citizens saw it as means to solve or end their plights in a way. Even though the way it was structured generated a lot of discussion, it was because of the benefit in the long-run.
Proximity: here, issues become news in terms of distance or how closer is the issue to individuals, countries, institutions etc. In Ghana the issue of ebola became topical issue because the disease was spreading in some countries in West aAfric of which Ghana was a member of part.
Prominence: this talks about the elite people in societies. News are been generated from them (elite people) since they have a say or they have gain popularity in the society. Normally is about our politicians, public figures, celebrities etc. In Ghana the president His Excellency Nana Akuffo Addo the then candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was seen drinking kalypo and it was trending everywhere in the country.
